The first Blade movie was a decent comic book movie. Its biggest problem was that its opening scene was so good that the rest of the movie could never get back to that level. Blade II is a little smarter. It starts with a great opening sequence, but it is one that sets up the story instead of a big action set piece. When I first heard that Guillermo Del Toro (Cronos, Mimic, etc.) was directing a sequel I was a little surprised. Del Toro is one of the great horror movie directors out there right now. He has a very distinct style and obviously has a variety of issues that he loves to explore in his films. A half an hour into Blade II it is obvious that Del Toro is in full control. The action sequences are very well done and he ups the gore level way beyond anything in the first film. In my opinion the story also has fewer weaknesses than the first movie.
