SUMMARY
I had expected to find this film a lot funnier, and it does have
its moments, but it just didn't seem to jell overall. The general
concept behind the film is that Eddie Murphy plays a major star
named Kit Ramsey and Robert Bowfinger (Steve Martin) needs him
in his film to get some big Hollywood money. The problem is that
Bowfinger is at best a third rate director, so he comes up with
the idea of filming Kit without him knowing he is in a film. The
actors just walk up to him and recite their lines. This leads
to some very funny scenes, but I felt like more could have been
pulled from this setup. What really works is the need and obsession
all these characters have to make a movie. The picture overall
is pretty good. Not reference quality but very few problems either.
The outtakes and deleted scenes are interesting, but as usual
the work best as outtakes. The featurette give us nothing really
new, but Frank Oz has some interesting insights on his commentary
track. Overall this is a good rental, but I would not go much
further than that.
