I have never really liked the classic musical (with a few exceptions), but the last two (Moulin Rouge and Chicago) from the big Hollywood studios have definitely kept me interested. Maybe because both of these films are so aware of themselves, they have moved into an area that I can appreciate. Chicago is solid right from the start with a great set up of the story and a great opening song and dance number with Catherine Zeta Jones as Velma Kelly. We soon meet the adulteress Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) and the major duo of the film is set up. The film is full of great scenes and performances, but my personal favorite is the dance number for the song Cell Block Tango. It is great song, with brilliant choreography and the performers all decked out in stockings and garter belts knock it out of the ball park. The movie is worth seeing for this number in itself. Whether you are a fan of the classic musical or not, Chicago has something that just about every filmgoer can enjoy.
