I purchased this movie a few years ago and it has just sat on my shelf for some reason. John Wayne is not always my favorite actor (although there are certain films I love him in) but I am a big fan of director Don Siegel so I do not know what took so long. The movie starts of a little "cheeky" in my opinion. Siegel lets Wayne play his over the top style which I personally find annoying. Luckily as soon Wayne meets up with Dr. Hostetler (James Stewart), who reconfirms a diagnosis of cancer (I am not giving away anything here) the film settles into a solid groove. Wayne plays a famous gunslinger (or shootist) that just wants to relax during his final days on earth. His reputation precedes him, and everyone wants a shot at immortality for killing a legend, so there is little chance of a peaceful end. Wayne plays this distress and longing for quiet very well. In fact a couple of scenes Wayne has with Lauren Bacall are some of his most moving acting ever. Like the the character he was playing John Wayne was also suffering from cancer and this ended up being his last film. This is definitely a movie worth checking out.
